Dr. Austin Chen is a board-eligible, dual-fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip preservation and reconstruction, and sports medicine surgery.

Dr. Austin Chen is a board-certified, dual-fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip preservation (also known as hip arthroscopy) and reconstruction (i.e hip replacement), and sports medicine surgery. He helps patients using innovative treatments for hip injuries such as impingement and labral tears, as well as injuries to the shoulder and knee. He also adept in hip replacements.

Dr. Chen is an active member of the Physician Pool for U.S. Ski & Snowboard team, having offered on site care for US Olympians including Julia Mancuso and Mikaela Shiffrin. Dr. Chen has authored or coauthored a number of published or accepted-for-publication scientific articles and book chapters in the field of hip and sports medicine surgery. He continues to be dedicated to research, as he believes it allows him to offer the most innovative and scientifically-proven patient treatment options and care.

Dr. Chen graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelors in Science and a deep love for the Fighting Irish. He then earned his medical degree and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Deciding to continue his education and advance his expertise, Dr. Chen completed a surgical fellowship in sports medicine at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute in Taos, New Mexico. His second fellowship was dedicated to the art of arthroscopic and minimally invasive robotic surgery of the hip. It was completed under the internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon Dr. Benjamin Domb at the American Hip Institute and Hinsdale Orthopedics in Illinois.

Dr. Chen lives in Boulder, Colorado with his two sons and his beloved rescue dog Bailey. He enjoys working on classic cars, drinking fine coffee, and spending his time outdoors, pursuing his passion for skiing, mountain biking, hiking and fly fishing.

He has completed two fellowships in order to offer his patients the best orthopedic care available. Unlike many surgeons, through his second fellowship, Dr. Chen has spent an entire year training in the art of arthroscopic surgery of the hip. This has allowed Dr. Chen to become highly specialized and expert in the multitude of hip surgeries that can be performed with this minimally invasive technique.
