Chondroplasty and Microfracture

Austin Chen MD > Hip Treatments > Chondroplasty and Microfracture

Articular cartilage covers and protects our joints, allowing us to have pain-free, smooth and gliding movement. When the cartilage is damaged or begins to degenerate, pieces may break off and become loose in the joint. This results in pain and the further progression of the injury. Since the articular cartilage is unable to heal itself, eventually the cartilage damage may leave the bone exposed. This will cause pain, grinding, soreness, stiffness, and a surface that does not glide smoothly. In these cases, an orthopedic hip surgeon, like hip specialist serving Boulder, Colorado, Dr. Austin Chen will perform a chondroplasty and microfracture surgery.

What is a chondroplasty and microfracture surgery?

Dr. Austin Chen performs a chondroplasty and microfracture to smooth out irregular shaped cartilage and to remove any loose flaps in those with articular cartilage damage. Chondroplasty and Microfracture are arthroscopic techniques that will provide a smoother gliding surface for the joint, reducing the symptoms associated with the injury and further preventing propagation of the chondral injury. Using several small incisions and a tiny camera inserted into the joint, Dr. Austin Chen will be able to assess the damaged cartilage. Once the damaged and irregular areas are found, they are smoothed out using small surgical tools. Any loose pieces of cartilage will also removed.

What is the recovery of a chondroplasty and microfracture surgery?

Patients will follow a physical therapy program following surgery. Physical therapy can be completed through the Boulder Centre for Orthopedics Physical Therapy Center, which offers all patients complete and seamless recovery care. Many patients will find themselves resuming their normal physical activities with minimal pain usually after four months.
