What is a patellar or kneecap dislocation?
The patella, or better known as the kneecap, dislocations occur when the patella shifts out of place leaving the patellofemoral groove. Dr. Austin Chen, orthopedic knee and sports medicine specialist in Boulder Colorado works with patients to treat patellar dislocations.
What is the cause of a patellar dislocation?
A patellar dislocation can occur during extreme knee pivoting and rotation. Occasionally it occurs when the knee is bent and the patella is hit.A patellar dislocation often occurs when playing sports include soccer, gymnastics, and ice hockey.
What is the treatment for a patellar dislocation?
Non surgical treatment for a patellar dislocation is the most common treatment after the primary dislocation of the patella. This includes rest, bracing, physical therapy and the use of anti-inflammatories.
In cases where dislocation is recurring, and disruption of the medial patellofemoral ligaments occurs, Dr. Chen may suggest surgery. A MPRL reconstructive surgery may be necessary to repair the Medial Patellofemoral Ligament.
