I felt lucky to get Dr. Chen for my emergency surgery. I came in with agonizing pain with a hip fracture. After the surgery the pain was minimal and I am improving fast. He was very kind and reassuring. I felt good in his care.
I am from the East and have gone mostly to doctors in Denver (since my move out here in 2013) as my girlfriend from college has recommended her specialists. I “happened upon this medical practice” as distance was a factor and my body was in a lot of pain (I live in Broomfield—easy drive to Boulder.) I had been to another orthopedic practice in Boulder and knew I did not wish to return. I was thrilled they “got me in that day” (Angelina–indeed and angel) and then blessed to see R. Austin Chen. I appreciated Dr Chen’s expansion of the discussion, which was initially limited by my lack of knowledge about the numerous tendon, muscles, and their likely damages. We talked through several “what if” scenarios and he helped me understand the likely situation that now exists in my back. Even more valuable is his experience from earlier patients and his studies, so I could feel comfortable that the suggested non-invasive path to healing is proper for my case. I am a new and total booster for him and your practice.
I came to see Dr. Chen because another surgeon treating me for a fractured hip was difficult to communicate with and failed to consider me as a whole person. My experience with Dr. Chen was everything I hoped for —he is extremely knowledgeable from a medical standpoint about my situation AND he was kind, compassionate, and empathetic. Dr Chen is very knowledgeable, but what is more impressive to me is that when it came to something he was not sure of, he referred me to then Stem Cell specialist at the clinic. A lot of Doctors I have encountered would not have done that.
Dr Chen and all the staff were great. I was seen promptly and everyone was very friendly. Dr Chen did a thorough exam of my hip and explained all the treatment options.

I’ve been seeing another orthopedic, and this was a totally different experience. Dr. Chen is professional and thoughtful, and I didn’t feel like I was being pushed out the door for other appointments, which was important because this injury is so important to me. At this point overall, I am pleased that all factors are being thoroughly weighed by Dr. Chen in deciding a course of action for the best healing process. I am glad he is movement-minded – gradually adding more movement each day has resulted in noticeable improvements and I’m glad he is not pushing surgical cleaning as an immediate solution.
Dr. Chen took the time to listen to another concern that I had and directed me to an appropriate doctor at the Boulder Centre and explained the likelihood of how I should proceed with that concern. When I left his assistance gave me the business cards of the professionals he had mentioned. Very much appreciated his expertise and kindness throughout the procedure.
