Impingement syndrome is condition commonly seen in aging adults. Impingement involves the contact or rubbing of two bony structures, which can create bone spurring and degenerative changes of the joint. As a result, bursitis, inflammation, and sometimes the tearing of the rotator cuff can occur which causes pain. In cases where non surgical techniques are not successful, Dr. Austin Chen, Orthopedic shoulder specialist may suggest an arthroscopic subacromial decompression surgery.
What is a subacromial decompression surgery?
In a subacromial decompression surgery, Dr. Chen will remove the impinging portion of the shoulder. Any bony spurs on the rotator cuff that is contributing to inflammation will be smoothed. This will provide smooth movement of the joint allowing the patient to avoid future damage to intra-articular structures, such as the labrum.
What is the recovery from a subacromial decompression surgery?
Following the surgery, Dr. Chen will send the patient home with a physical therapy regime to help restore strength and mobility. Physical therapy can be completed through the Boulder Centre for Orthopedics Physical Therapy Center, which offers all patients complete and seamless recovery care. Recovery times for shoulder decompression surgery can vary, but most improvement tends to occur between 3 and 6 months after the procedure. Many people are able to make small shoulder movements relatively early in recovery.
